NEW EMBROIDERY

One booth I visited at BU this year was that of Jenny Haskins. Simon and Margaret where manning the booth. I ordered their newest design collections from Brewer and was pleasantly surprised to see them in the latest magazine that just arrived in the store. I picked up my copy on Saturday so you'll be getting a call soon if you have us ordering a copy for you.

The designs shown on the cover are from her 3D Embroidery Magic design collection. She uses Krinkle Magic as part of the embroidery process for some awsome flowers and textured quilting stitches. I saw these in person in their booth at BU and they are as exquisite as they appear in the magazine.

Sam's Love Hearts, Perfect Bliss and more I can't recall were also ordered for future projects and classes.

Enjoy this issue - many beautiful designs and projects are found in this issue.

MORE ON CHLOE

I'm at a quandry right now on the last lilac block to embroider. The picture shows the embroidery fits in the lilac block but the recent (March) instruction changes by BERNINA have the design overlapping on both long sides. I was very careful to keep the lilac pieces during the cutting just in case I needed another piece so I can remake it if I need to. Then on another page they recognize you can chose either method. I think after writing this post I've made my mind up to just center the design and embroider, letting the design overlap to the thin inner border; option A. In absolute worse case scenario if I absolutely do not like the look I can remake. The kit did come with about 1/3 yd extra of everything but the lilac! I've got all the borders stitched and just this one lilac piece and 2 other blocks are left to stitch out. These other 2 blocks will have the center of the main block stitched and that will go very quickly because they aren't a very filled design.
Then I will layer the quilt, batting and backing and at this point the plan is to do some of the quilting embroidery designs from Diane Gaudynski's latest collection then finish with some BSR fill in work.

CHLOE CORNER DESIGNS UPDATE

I decided that I would rotate these so they offset each other for the bottom two corners. For the top left it's also rotated so it is mirrored of the bottom left.

CHLOE PROGRESS ON THE 830

This is the large corner design for each of the ( 4) 3 corners. I ended up first rotating the design in the hoop so it fit the length of the hoop. Then I hooped my stabilizer. Next I used the seam of the 2 flying geese blocks to butt up against the side of the inner hoop. That helped keep the pieced fabric section straight in the hoop.

I hadn't even thought about any other border than the one from the kit but once this design finished (some 80 plus minutes later) this screen displayed.

On the right side shows an option using endless embroidery. Wouldn't that make a beautiful border on this quilt! If you have the time that is. I could see it stitched on the Candice lavendar - the same fabric that the corners are stitched on. It took me all afternoon today to stitch out corners 2 and 6. Maybe tomorrow night I can get another one stitched out, with any luck!

The next posting I will show the beautiful method I found to do the center block on the 830. It's two hoopings, even with the jumbo hoop but this is a very cool techinque that I'll share.

Ran across this wooden work of art to store my bobbins in. Made by a husband of a long arm quilter in Pennsylvania. Go here to see other products by Fred. I just ordered a cherry bobbin holder for me. This is for the 8 series but he has other sizes available that would hold bobbins of all sizes. I thought it was beautiful.

QUILT SHOP HOP

Deb Yaden took the pattern for the floral applique blocks from the finishing kit from Strawberry Patches 2011 Shop Hop quilt and digitized the designs using her Bernina embroidery software.

Didn't she create some beautiful flowers! Here's tips from Deb regarding stabilizer, etc.
"I used 2 layers of a fusible, medium weight stabilizer. My stitch width was 8. I think 9 or 10 might have been better." She did offer to share her embroidery designs if anyone is interested. If you missed purchasing the pattern contact Strawberry Patches to purchase your copy of the pattern today.
I think she did a great job!

CHLOE TIME

Finally, am trying to establish a Sunday date for June when we can meet and kick off this very creative quilt project from Bernina, P&B fabrics, and OESD. This is a Bernina embroidery software project for those that have Editor Plus or Designer Plus versions of our software. If you've not seen this before, the embroidery designs are based on the designs in the lovely fabric patterns.

SHOP HOP

Today was the first time that Mom and I had a chance to see what all this hubbub was about the quilt shop hop. It's different when you're on the shopper end of the things for sure.
We started out about 8am this morning. Getting on the road to Visalia for first stop and what a treat it was at Thimbletowne. Reconized shoppers from Strawberry Patches! Friends in new places is a great way to start the day out. Every place we stopped was great fun, lovely goodie bags from the shops and a wide variety of treats for the eyes as well as treats to eat! The shops all showed their appreciation to the shoppers who took time to travel to their shops to purchase the block material for the quilt project. I have to say that the completed quilts we feasted our eyes on were so much better than what we saw online. Maybe it's because it's really hard to get a good photograph of something in black.
Some shops were small, others nice and roomy but it's really hard not compare them to our favorite place!! I suppose it's like taking a vacation to a fun vacation spot - it's fun and exciting to go someplace new and different but after awhile it is good to be home again too. While we won't be able to enter the prize for visiting all the shops we entered the drawing for a lovely prize basket at each shop. So tomorrow I will be on the other side of the flurry of shoppers as I take my shift at the shop for a few hours.
Plus I need now to find the perfect handle for the new bag pattern and fabrics that found me in Hanford.

So if you haven't yet checked out the shop hop give yourself a treat and visit some of the shops!

Found some terrific new design collections at Embroidery Online site that are on my "must have" list.

I love these monograms, they're so old world looking. Lots of possible uses for these. As a reminder if you don't have the Bernina software download the design format that your machine needs. Also, at the Bernina USA site you can now download a freebie version of the softwre - artlink - that will allow you to send a design to your embroidery machine via usb connection or by use of a usb flash drive.

This collection is also on my list. These are great for quilting, through embroidery, your own quilts, tablerunners and other creations. Gotta have this one!!

Happy Mother's Day wishes to everyone.

I loved waking up to cloudy skies and a cool breeze this morning. What a welcome break from a couple of warm days. Herbie made French toast this morning for us. We've gotten away from drinking milk but he's been drinking "silk" a soy milk product and used that for the French toast. Have to say they were wonderful!

Will be getting with Amanda to get a date on the calendar to kick off the Chloe quilt project so watch for news on that soon. There's time to get your kit ordered so if you're interested please let her know.

One of our favorite embroidery/quilt designers has a stunning quilt in a recent issue of "MACHINE EMBROIDERY" magazine. This one is Parterre Garden and currently the designs are 25% off here.
The complete quilt instructions begin on pg 56. It lists the finished size at 82" sq but I'm considering a wallhanging version, ending after the smaller blocks on point for the final border.
She is the designer of Queen Anne's Diamonds which we did nearly 4 years ago. Her designs stitch out so wonderfully they are fun to watch ast they stitch and bring your thread to life. Have to start focusing on fabrics for this one. I really do like the full sized quilt though with those large embroidery squares. Will be fun to stitch this one out, although the first part of fabric selection has to be completed first! Oh dear!

Software Sampler Saturday

Today is Software Sampler Saturday. If you have Bernina embroidery software - version 5 or version 6, editor plus or designer plus then this class is for you! Recent changes in the program now include steps for those that may not have the most current version nor designer plus. As long as you have editor plus V5 then you will have instructions for the current lesson.
Today's class is Dimensional Embroidery.
The lesson covers couching, ribbon work and tassels on a lined zippered bag. Learn to create tassels, embroidered couching, etc. and combine it with raw edge applique for a great textured effect and insert a decorative zipper.
Class is at 1pm. See you then.

National Quilting Day

Ok all you quilters today is your official day! It's National Quilting Day! So pull out something and spend today working on your project. I hope to do the same this afternoon but first thing on the list today is coffee with the girlfriends. Carmel Macchieto. I just went online to verify the spelling and found there is a skinny version so I need to check that out. Since I get one of these at the most once a week I look at it as a treat! So treat yourself to some quilting action today and enjoy!!

Have you seen the new embroidery project from Bernina, Chloe? We've had the quilt kit, the embroidery designs and the quilting embroidery designs that Bernina recommended. The plan is to meet as a group and go over the specifics to the project and then work on the blocks at your own pace at home. The instructions that came with the fabric kit have already been replaced by Bernina, but I've told those that have purchased the kits.

It looks like it will be a fun quilt project so if you are interested and haven't purchased the kit yet please contact the store to purchase yours. This project will involve multi hooping at least one block. The fabric kit includes all fabric for the top except backing. We don't carry this fabric line and the embroidery designs were specially created based on the fabric line so don't delay if you are interested in joining us. The fabric kit does come packaged in a nice vinyl zippered case that you can use for other purposes afterwards. Class date to be announced.

IDES OF MARCH

Can you believe the 15th of March is just next week? I'd say time flies when you're having fun but I'll wait on that one.

We have the runaround bag pattern in the shop now that was the project from Software Sampler. Plus we also have the book that was used in the project that was shown on the webinar and in the instructions. Great designs for using in the cross stitch portion of the embroidery software.
Amanda W has done a great job incoporating Editor Plus level as well as version 5. If you have either of these then please join us on the 4th Saturday of the month for Software Sampler.

I have a mystery class scheduled in ~~April~~ May and then in ~~May~~ June. You can see the details on the latest newsletter but all you need is a jellroll and your machine and basic sewing supplies (thread, scissors, etc). It will be a lot of fun. Be warned - this is like potato chips - hard to stop at one!!

We have a new quilt kit and embroidery designs plus quilting designs coming. This is new from Bernina and the fabric line and the designs are "CHLOE". Once they're all in you'll be hearing more on this. I'm looking forward to creating this one and know you'll enjoy it as well.

ARE YOU READY FOR SPRING?

If you are then you will like this project. It's using the endless embroidery function on the BERNINA 830 machine. I'm using kona cotton fabric and it's been pretty quick to put together. The side panels take three hoopings with the mega hoop. The end panel is just a single hooping.
I think it's the perfect project to start preparing for Spring.

I've got 3 sides embroidered, one of them has had the stabilizer rinsed out and is currently drying. One of the long panels is all that's left to stitch. My goal is to have it stitched by Saturday so we'll see how that works out. Once I get them all embroidered and attached then I'll top stitch the edge of the panels all the way around to secure to the main panel.
I tell you, using Best Press by Ellen sure does make the kona cotton have a really nice feel to the fabric. Not stiff as if I used spray starch but firm and a wonderfully fresh smell- love the lilac flavor!

Cleaning

Wouldn't you know while trying to straighten up my sewing room I ran across a project that I started at least a couple of years ago. So of course I couldn't help myself and had to sew out 4 of the flowers to complete one block. Hopefully I can work on it again a little bit at time to finish it.
It's from the same company that created our wonderful Wildflower embroidered quilt - Smith Street Designs. This quilt is named "Tulip Time".

I think there a couple more large floral blocks like this I need to embroider and construct and then I can start on the smaller embroidered blocks, then the rest of the piecing begins. There are 6 different floral blocks. It's been so long since I gathered the fabrics for this that some of them I have no idea where they came from but I expect I'll have to add more:). Some of the fabrics though, I liked them so much I've also used them in other projects too.

I even found a new pair of those squeezy scissors that are perfect for machine embroidery applique - it's like I was made to find them after finding this UFO. I found at least 3 other UFO quilts that I need to finish up. Some have machine embroidery but not all. I figure if I work on them a little each evening that's good therapy and the bonus is I'll be finishing up some of the old projects. I even found a bag with fabrics and all for the first mystery quilt retreat that Suzanne held! I didn't know I still had that one.

This was like a mini vacation, spent in my sewing space. First real sewing therapy for 2011~ Ahhhh

CIVIL WAR 2011 SESQUICENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION

What's interesting is that she's also posting bits of facts related to the Civil War. So with the history factor it's more than just another free quilt pattern. These are an 8 inch finished block. So dig out the scraps and start making your first block. She's designed this quilt using a new line from Moda that's due in the shops next month. Look for the "civil war reunion" fabric line to enhance this project.

Here is Pam's runner she worked on during the 2011 New Year Day's class. Isn't it fabulous. And the girl doesn't like purple so she make this for her sister. What a gal. Pam also was the lucky winner of the Sharon Schamber "Delicate Sitch Quilting Designs" from OESD.

It was a fun class. Started off by showing the group how to use the Bernina V6 software to create the circular designs. The feather embroidery is a quilting design from the Sharon Schamber designs. Then the stipping done with the use of the BSR to fill in around the feather quilting.

HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT - IT'S 2011~~

We're starting the day off right by participating in a mystery class of sorts at the shop today. The project includes embroidery, quilting by both embroidery and BSR (or free motion) so should be a lot of fun. I have some in the crowd today that have never used an embroidery machine so this will be an eye opening for them, and one of those is my own sister, Jean! She's led a sheltered life for the last 19 years living in Ohio. We had a lot of fun just showing her how to use a rotary cutter while getting her fabric and all ready for the class today so I'll be sure and post pictures from the activities today. We're liable to have some *memorable* kodak moments.

I hope all you quilters and embroidery enthisiasts have a wonderful new year and that the year 2011 will be memorable in a positive light!
May all your sewing never encounter a dull needle:)

It's good to see it was appreciated! I didn't get a label made yet but that will be the embroidery effort. Good thing this was super simple because there was no time to focus on anything that required anything more! I have high hopes for 2011 Christmas.
My sister is improving and Drs now say tomorrow she will be moved to a private room.That was the best Christmas gift we could have hoped for.

IT'S THE 20TH OF THE MONTH!!

You know that is time for a new Raggedy block from Kaaren. She's settling in from their move to Nova Scotia. The link is posted on the side of my blog so you can download this block and any others you might have missed. It's been a very fun project. I've started quilting this by doing it a block at a time using my embroidery machine. I'll get a picture posted soon to give you an idea of how I'm doing this.

HELLO REINDEER!!

Margo has used the applique pattern from the December/January 2011 issue of McCall's Quick Quilts magazine to digitize the embroidery version of these quilt blocks. She is using minkee fabrics for her reindeer fabrics. She even did one with a red nose for the Rudolph block. The issue is still out and available because I saw it at Borders bookstore yesterday. This would be a good way to use up your scraps of Christmas fabrics and stitch a reindeer to each block. The blocks make up to 6 x 9 inches.

Wow, it's nearly here and I will admit that I am not ready. Oh well, at least there a few days until then.

Look at this darling little caroler doll. The instructions are found here.
I think the face would be perfect for a quick embroidery project and stitching around the face to the body fabric.A great project to start working on after Christmas and have a good number ready for next year! These are so cute!

Chenille Flowers

CUTWORK SOFTWARE

If you enjoyed the cutwork webinar as we did last Saturday then you surely will enjoy this pillow I found here this am.

Then as I was reading the instructions I realized it was made using a fusible vinyl film and a separate unit that attaches to your computer. Not my intention to suggest any other method than using our cutwork software for the letters and all. Cute pillow idea though.

NEW YEAR'S DAY PROJECT

Plans are underway for our 2011 class. I will be taking the supply list into the store later this afternoon so sign up when you can. This project will incorporate embroidery during the class and make a tablerunner using the techniques I will show you in class.
You could use them to turn a this project into a quilt. We will actually do embroidery and quilting using embroidery during the class. I'll have machines available for embroidery in case you do not own an embroidery machine - just indicate that is needed when you sign up for the class so I will know how many I need to have available.

CeCe did this for a special wedding gift. She was having problems trying to figure out which stabilizer to use. She didn't want to have to wash it after the embroidery so I suggested using a couple layers of the lightweight tearaway stabilizer from OESD. When the emboidery is finished carefully remove the stabilizer a layer at a time. Great job CeCe!!

Happy Veterans Day

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11th as Veterans Day and called upon Americans everywhere to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace.

In 1968, Congress moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. However, it became apparent that the November 11th date was historically significant to a great many Americans. As a result, Congress formally returned the observance of Veterans Day to its traditional date in 1978.

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery. At 11 a.m., a color guard, made up of members from each of the military services, renders honors to America's war dead during a tradition-rich ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

It's arrived ~ the number 4 block for Kaaren's raggedy friends quilt. Now I have it ready for digitizing and then stitching out. This is the first block for row 2. The one embroidered square is 8 1/2" square. I need to get those instructions posted I promised as to how I'm using the BERNINA embroidery software on these blocks.

QUILT SHOW RECOVERY

Wow, the Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara was one big show! Mom and I decided this was the year we would stop talking about wanting to do the show and signed up for several classes. This is a professionally managed show by the Mancuso Management group and as one would expect was done well.
We walked our feet and legs off at the knees several times. We took a class for each of the 3 days we were there. The location in Santa Clara was at the Hyatt and the adjoining convention center so was so easy to get around and we never even stepped outside once we arrived Wednesday afternoon until we left Sunday morning! The quilts were magnificent. Cindy Seitz Krug won an award for her quilting on a joint-effort quilt with a friend. Cindy's quilting was spectacular and was well deserved of the ribbon and award. I took several pictures of quilts that we admired for the overall image and others of just pieces of the quilting efforts to share with you at the software sampler class this Saturday. Vendors of all categories and wonderful surprises and special deals rounded out the days. Some of the teachers I wasn't that familiar with but after seeing their works I am looking forward to the possibility of being one of their students. The show does have a policy of allowing teachers to teach for 2 consecutive shows and then they have to take 2 years off before they can teach for another 2 years, etc. 2 years on and 2 years off. John Flynn, yes that John Flynn has a wonderful since of humor. Sue Nichols was a joy - just like Margo said she would be. Even with a major sinus headache I was still thrilled to be in her class. I was even the light monitor and was gifted with a spool of her King Tut thread as a thank you. Nina McVeigh taught a fun class using the BERNINA software that I want to share with you as a software class. The project makes a neat neat gift item! Oh, and we got to the see the Rose of Sharon quilt in all its glory! Quite an accomplishment to have the back of the quilt as beautiful as the front of the quilt! Sharon Pedersen was the artist behind the Rose of Sharon quilt and contest - she is sooo funny!! Mom enjoyed her class with Sharon and after listening to Sharon as the hostess of one of the festivities for those that took classes - I'd take a class with her in a minute!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the show and away from home!

Are you a member of The Quilt Show? It's here if it's new to you. I recently joined for a year - hadn't joined since the early days when it first started and my free subscription ended. I enjoy the Bernina free video tutorials so figured I would go ahead and join for a year and see what I can get out of it.
This morning I see they have a free give away for a set of the Olfa cutting mats so I entered that. Last night I downloaded some free project instructions that look interesting. So we'll see how it goes.

After Software Sampler class yesterday I purchased several Halloween fabrics to use in making the Ambrosia bag I posted about yesterday. So I've added another project on my list. Yesterday morning I did stitch out the redwork designs from block 3 of the Raggedy Annie project. They are soooo cute! Stinkin' cute! Nnow to construct the block and I will have completed row 1 of the top! I'm amazing myself with this since I can't sit at the machine too long at a stretch. I'm going to post a brief tutorial on how I'm using the Bernina embroidery software to create these blocks. Watch for that in the next few days.

Just a note that one of the items are D rings and the size we have at the store 1-1/4" reads to be the perfect size. That's a difficult size to find but we have them at the shop! So I'll be purchasing a package of them today.

I remember what I was doing when we first heard about the attack on the twin towers. Then how it worsened during the day with the Pentagon attack and then the crash of flight 93. What a horrific day in our Nation's history. Still very emotional personally to listen and watch the recordings and all from that day. There was a special on Fox news last night that highlighted two men that worked themselves out of the debris in tower 1 to climb down the stairs all the way out of the building and went hand in hand straight to a church. To this day they remain in touch as they share something this strong between them. Very remarkable and something good created from this horrific event.

Kaaren (from the Raggedy Ann blocks) has a new sampler available for download from her site. It's part of her First Friday of the month projects.

It finishes about 25" x 27" and looks to be a way to use up some of your wool scraps as Kaaren did or just use cottons - which is what I'll do. In looking at the colors I think I will draw from the stash I'm using for Annie blocks and the only new needed is the black. Again I'm thinking that the osnaburg fabric will be good for these blocks. Or a muslin or small print would be equally fine. I can also see this in some of the civil war era prints too. With the size of the blocks I'm thinking I should be able to combine more than 1 at a time in my embroidery hoop. So will have to start working on this now.

Raggedy & Friends Block 1

I finally got the block stitched. It was just too hot to do much of anything last week.

The block on the sides is the sashing. The cornerstones will be a red fabric of some sort. Kind of forgot to select something for that but have plenty of time since we're only on the 2nd block. I am going for a scrappy look. I am digitizing the artwork and so the large design above took only 13 minutes to stitch! I finally decided to use Isacord thread and I liked my choice after the first stitchout. If you haven't checked out the free BLOM for this yet look for the button on the left side of my blog. College

Speaking of school. Here we are with Brett, #1 Grandson after his good bye dinner. He left the week after this picture for college in Chico. He is rooming with 2 or 3 other college students. He certainly darfs us. We figure the football coaches are going to be after him to play ball but he has never been interested in playing football. He's a gentle giant!

Now Kelcy is due to leave soon for Santa Cruz to start college too. She is a year younger than Brett. She graduated wtih honors and a 4.xx gpa. She intends to bcome a pharmacist. Their parents are left with 2 at home but know it will a tough adjustment.

Now this was her group from North High that had GPAs above 4.0. Amazing! Kelcy was right in the middle, in fact, she is behind the guy in the suit right in the middle of the picture. I snapped this at that moment while in the stadium bleachers. It was pretty darn warm that night. The year Brett graduated was the last year the graduation was held at North high due to the large number of students graduating. Kelcy was the first North High student to compete in the state tennis championship.

Time does go by quickly! Enjoy your kids and grandkids because they grow up, go away to school and on to lead their own lives!

Real School

I thought her shoes were pretty cool. They were colorful, had bling and when she walked lights flashed all over the shoes. And remember when you were a kid with new tennies how fast you thought you could run? Well she had to show me how fast she could run in her new tennies! Streakin' fast for sure.

Ok, I have stitched the embroidery out for both months. I didn't get the sizes right for month 2 - they're a little too large. So I've got them resized and will stitch them out again.

For my embroidery background I'm using osnaburg fabric. Not sure why some of the stitching on the right collar didn't stitch so will double check that in the software. Raggedy Ann and Andy in block 1 are my favorites to this point! Ha. Will shoot for constructing the blocks tomorrow.

New free design from Bird Brain that would be easy for digitizing but can also be done by hand.

Are you stitching the Raggedy and Ann designs from Kaaren? I'm digitizing them and have sewn just the two from last month. I have the fabrics cut to piece the whole block, including the sashing. Tomorrow I hope to stitch out the two from this month. If you have V6 Designer Plus embroidery software you will find these single color images fairly simple to digitize. I'm enjoying the freehand open object tool in V6. There's a closed object version but since the embroidery is redwork the open object tool is perfect. That and the blackwork run tool help make this quick to do. My goal is to at least post the embroidered blocks tomorrow, if not the pieced blocks.

Reusable Sandwich Wrap

Have you laminated fabric yet? It's pretty darn simple. Just choose matte or glossy. Then follow the instructions to fuse to one side of your fabric - usually the "right" side of the fabric, but hey there, this time the side that is laminated is what goes next to your sandwich or whatever is being wrapped. Now you're ready to create a number of nifty projects. Here is one that is in keeping with the "go green" focus that is pretty popular these days.

What I forgot to add was that if you want to spruce yours up by adding embroidery to your fabric, add the embroidery BEFORE laminating the fabric.That allows your fabric to still work correctly for this project.

Embroidery on the bed

Recently I was wondering through Bed, Bath and Beyond and stumbled on some embroidery quilts, terrific shams or pillow treatments. Luckily I had my camera with me so I snagged some photos to share with you. I just kept forgetting to post this pictures.

This one had the embroidered block, surrounded with just the small pieced fabrics. The embroidered blocks were the same as what you see here. Really a charming piece. Didn't want to see which 3rd world country created this one.

This pillow sham had piping all around. The strip of embroidery and applique extended across the width of the bed-sized pillow. Loved the aqua shade of fabric and embroidery. Very soothing.

Yes, this was on the same display as the previous pillow. Actually there are 2 in this shot that I thought were worthy to mention. The pillow on the left on the white background has a nice embroidery design laid out across the pillow front. The pillow on the right has a fun treatment of rows of fabric that finishes into nice rows of pleats across the pillow front. Looked like you could do this with a tie or piece of fabric that was seamed together and then turned right side out so no raw edges. This one was a little smaller than the others - more of an accent pillow. More of that grayish aqua shade that is very nice.

Well, imagine that! I found a lime green pillow on display. Now this is just a simple embroidered medillion or even a quilting pattern that is evenly spaced across the width of the pillow sham in a contrasting thread color so the design pops against the color of the fabric!

Knowing how pricey these things can be I am sure that you could find the perfect fabrics and all to make something very similar to any of these for a fraction of the cost. And it would be an original. So now, get started!!

Colorful New Butterfly Quilt

Found this great project here. Perfect for using scraps up. Just need a background and black on this one really makes the butterflies jump off the quilt top.

Just keep making the butterflies to make it the size you want. I really like to scrappy look and easy to see how to change the look by changing the fabrics. There was a photo I saw too without the strip of fabric down the center, just a nother look. Would think that 30s fabrics would be able great look!

I just found this post from Kaaren on her blog that she will start a 10 month BOM with Raggedy Ann and Andy embroidery blocks that she designs. It's a colorful quilt and I think it will be a great project for the fall as it is in more of the warm colors. A great project that appears that the designs are red work. The embroidery has other pieced fabrics added around it for the "block". I'm looking for it to start on the 20th and then a new block each month. So add this one to your list to check out. I've added a button on the left side of my blog - look for the Raggedy Ann and Andy image and click on that to get to her site. Now we just have to be patient until the 20th when it starts so we can put our fabrics together. I have no idea of the size of this but I like it. You can do the redwork by hand or digitize it and sew them on your embroidery machine!

70,000 Stitch Out Error

Yes, I did it. I was stitching a block from the floral visions visions project and trying to clean up the area around my machine. While sewing the thread to the last color I realized the large lace like leaves were missing from my stitch out but they showed on the machine screen. I remember when it first started sewing I had stopped the machine so I could select the faster speed - on the 830 it's bunny mode. Well, I must have some how punched the arrow by accident and skipped that color. I was tempted to say - I'm done but then I thought no way, Jose! That's a lot of work to just toss. So I grabbed several other colors to stitch the flowers out in, deciding that I'd make a little tuft pillow or something like that with my stitch out so it won't go to waste. Not my intent but better than a complete loss!
Oh yeah, the block was more than 70,000 stitches. Really. I'd post a picture but it's still in the hoop. Attached to the machine. In the sewing room. All alone in the dark. I'm done for tonight. Tuesday and Wednesday too. Hopefully I have enough fabric for another block. If not, I think I might know a place where I can buy some more.

Good Morning Sun Shine

When I came out to the kitchen this am for a cup of coffee I caught a glimpse of the clouds and grabbed my camera.

Sorry for the cable wires, but look at those clouds! I was still in my nightgown so just wanted to grab a shot. These were in the east, north of the canyon. Beautiful colors!

Thank goodness the sky was not full of clouds as we sure don't want the humidity that would bring, but the sunrise was beautifully colored and wanted to share!

FLORAL VISIONS CLASS TIME

Class will be Saturday, July 17th 9am. If you need the designs contact Amanda at the store for details. She has already placed an order for the collection so they should be arriving any day.
This class will be a software class where we will build the blocks using the Bernina embroidery software so it's a skill builder class for V5 or V6 BERNINA embroidery software owners.
If you do not own the software please purchase the designs anyway. I am working on creating the split block designs for those that already own the designs - but that will be later in the fall if not in spring of 2011. In that class we will cover the construction of the quilt, beginning with the hands on intructions on how to stitch a block with multiple hoopings.
We'll have a great time as we embroider our way through the Floral Vision quilt project. Hope to see you in class.

FLORAL VISIONS

Anyone ready for a software class to create a new quilt? We don't have a Software Sampler class this month so I've been working on creating the blocks for this quilt in the BERNINA V6 embroidery software. It's perfect for the 830 with the jumbo hoop because the blocks fill the hoop. You can stitch it out on other machines but you will need to split the block design which means you will learn how to multi hoop which is is not hard at all. Once you get the steps down it's a simple matter to stitch out the block. Here is the first block that I've stitched.

The blocks are not difficult to create in the software and I don't see you could not use V5 for this project. After embroidering the center block you cut it down to 11 1/2" square and then add the borders you see in my image just above. The really hard part is deciding on your fabrics! It has taken me quite a while to decide and obviously I'm finally there. Now that I have my colors I'm really into this project. These blocks take time to stitch because they have more than 50,000 stitches. The 830 also has the color sequence which, as software users know, can save you a bunch of time. The block that is stitching as I write this had something like 51 color change when I loaded the design but after selecting color sequencing it now only has 11. You'll need to purchase the BERNIA Floral Visions design collection from Strawberry Patches. I'd like to get a class on the calendar for July so we can meet and I'll show you how to follow the instructions. You can do this without the 830 and I'll show you how.

I'm also creating the blocks and spliting them for use on other machines. I know that those that do not have the software would like to make this so once they purchase the designs I will help them out.

JUNE Software Sampler

Backgammon anyone? This was our Software Sampler project for June. And for those of you in the class when I showed you the first half that I had stitched - I had plenty of fabric, no problem. I found dice at Wally World today but nothing yet for the game pieces. Then I'll make the little bag for storing the game pieces. The cd even included game instructions so this is a great gift idea - Christmas is less than 6 months away!!! Terrific project for using the Cutwork Software. I do want to do a border design, once I figure out what embroidery I want to add - just not sure who will receive so that has me stumped right now.

I hope there is a new quilt project coming because these designs are beautiful! This is a new collection that is coming from BERNINA!

A total of 31 designs are included and they really look like applique - but I can't find that in print on the front or back cover images. Beautiful!! Sharon Pederson is a renowned quilt instructor who I noticed has several classes she will be teaching at the quilt show in Santa Clara this October. One of them is the Rose of Sharon but it is not this machine embroidery version.

CUTWORK

Working on the project for Software Sampler tomorrow and have to admit this is an amazing accessory. My husband was just in awe that our machine will do this when I showed him what I was doing. The project is to create a backgammon gameboard out of wool felt. It's amazing that it will cut 4 layers of it at one time. If you're not familiar with how this functions it is an accessory for only an embroidery machine. The software to create the objects comes with the face plate you see in the above shot. Notice how shiny it is - not your normal face plate. The needle has 4 different positions for cutting. In the screen shot below notice the big red x through the thread spool! Time to remove the thread from your machine. Anyway, the software is so smart to know when to tell you that the cutting direction needs to be changed. Your machine will cut all of one angle before it tells you which direction to use next. That's one smart team - the machine and the software.

This is the screen shot for the design that is using the cutwork needle to cut. Notice the thread spool with the red X - no thread is needed. Also shows the direction needed for the needle. Once it finishes all cuts for that direction then the display will change to the next direction, just as it would normally when it's time to change the thread color for the embroidery design. You just rotate the needle until you see the number that matches the display and you're ready to start cutting. Another winner from BERNINA!

We've got some cute new towels in at SP now. These are cotton towels perfect for embroidery, redwork, or machine applique, etc! Reasonably priced at $1.75 so better get your order in without delay. The towels are white but but your choose between red or blue at the eds of the towels. They even have a fabric loop on one corner which would make it perfect to button on your apron for wiping your hands, etc while you're working in the kitchen! I'm telling you these are really cute!

I'm on a quest for a wrist pincushion and found a link to this one. Pretty simple so now no excuse and need to make it. What fabric to use? Hmmm, I'll get back to you on that one and I'm thinking an embroidered initial on this would be the perfect touch!

Watch for an announcement by Strawberry Patches of a new series of 7 exclusive webinar classes just for 820 and 830 owners. Your machines have so much potential that Bernina has started a special series of webinars focused solely on the unique functions of your machines. What I've seen so far is really good and one session uses the Technical Education Mgr, Hans Herzog as the presenter for this particular session. It's nice to enjoy a pleasant male Swiss voice!

Susan's Off the Edge Chloe Shirt Edge Variation

This treatment was posted today on the Bernina blog. Created by Susan Fears it uses decorative stitches to decorate the edge of the front flap on this darling shirt. By using wash away stabilizer the stitches are supported while sewing yet when finished, washing the garment will totally disolve this leaving a wonderful designer look to your garment. I love the idea and we have many choices of stitches to find the perfect stitch! Even if you don't want to construct your own shirt it's so easy to do this to a shirt you already have on hand. So give this a try because I think you'll suprise yourself at how easy it is and how nice it looks once your done! Plus you can take credit for the whole garment then because it's our own creation.

My Favorite Rose

I think my roses from Mother's Day look pretty good still so I took a few pictures last night. This one is a wonderful shade of yellow and an orange. Have no idea the name of the rose. Now, in my Mom's rose garden she has a bush of beautiful roses with the most wonderful fragrance! I have to check them out on my way into their house and as I leave. Beautiful color and wonderful fragrance too.

So take time today to smell the roses!!

Found this cute wine wrap tutorial. Now it has no embroidery but depending on the fabric you choose there is no reason you couldn't add a nice design, a monogram or a wine related phrase to this before you construct the wrap. Great hostess gift and definitely easy to mail!! So check it out here.

Happy Mother's Day 2010

My daughter surprised me with a beautiful bouquet of yellow roses today. I was very surprised. We had a great barbeque dinner that my Dad prepared for everyone. Delicious thick steaks that he cooked on the grill before the rain came! What a surprise the rain was. Watched the second chipmunk movie with Caitlin - I remember the song coming out when I was just a kid. Herb's son Steve and their youngest brought me a cute Mother's Day card before we went over to my Mom and Dad's. Herbie gave me a touching card this morning and fixed pancakes for us at breakfast. So we've had a very nice day today for Mother's Day! It's good to have family. =)
Thanks Mom for everything you do. All the encouragement over the years and teaching me how to sew (on a Singer featherweight when I was about 8), craft and crochet. I was fortunate to have both you and Grandma Wallace providing the right genes to keep the creativity going all these years! You always said you could do anything you made up your mind you could do, and you were right.
